She graduated from medical university this year but joined the MD-PhD program two years ago. She already has a first-author article in the Hungarian Journal of Dermatology and Venereology and has co-authored three international journals. Her international first-author article will be published soon. In October, Noémi Varga was named the Best First-Year PhD Student at the Centre for Translational Medicine.

Noémi Varga graduated as a general practitioner from Semmelweis University this year. During her fifth year, she joined the Semmelweis University School of PhD Studies MD-PhD program. Before that, she spent a year researching as a student researcher at the Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Dermatooncology. “I heard about the opportunity of joining CTM from my SMS, Dr. Fanni Meznerics. I already did the first two years of the MD-PhD program and completed all the courses. My complex exam was in September this year. I haven't started my residency yet, but I plan to become a dermatologist. Accordingly, I am a member of the Dermatology and Immunology Group at the Centre for Translational Medicine.”

Dr. Varga's supervisor is Dr. Norbert Kiss, whose research focuses on the diagnosis of skin cancer. In the lab, they investigate how to measure tumor depth with various imaging tools such as multispectral imaging and high-frequency ultrasound. A publication on the evaluation of melanoma tumor thickness using high-frequency ultrasound and multispectral imaging and comparing these two methods will be published soon with Dr Varga as the first-author.

“In addition, we are working on a meta-analysis that compares imaging techniques suitable for diagnosing melanoma. In this research, we are looking for the most accurate non-invasive optical diagnostic tool for the detection of melanoma. Overall, our meta-analyses could improve the diagnostic accuracy of malignant melanoma detection.”

Besides her research work, Dr. Varga conducts practical sessions at the clinic, sometimes assisting in examinations. She also conducts practical exams for medical students and works with student researchers. Since the lab always has exciting projects, she will have plenty to choose from.
