Title of Research: “Recurrent Accute Pancreatitis Prevention by the Elimination of Alcohol and Cigarette Smoking (REAPPEAR)”

Purpose and Course of Research: After pancreatitis, 20% of patients may have recurrent episodes. The purpose of this study is to determine whether participation in an alcohol and smoking cessation program effectively reduces the number of recurrent episodes, and to what extent alcohol and smoking play a role in the development of new episodes. To this end, study participants are randomly assigned to one of two study groups. Before leaving the hospital, the patient will be part of a discussion, the aim of which is to help them quit alcohol and smoking. If the participant enters the withdrawal program, this discussion will be repeated every three months for two years. If the participant is placed in the other study group, they will be questioned and examined after one or two years, but the discussion will not be repeated. At each visit, the patients fill out a few short questionnaires about their alcohol and smoking habits, their quality of life and their social situation. In addition, blood pressure and body weight are measured, and biological samples (hair, blood, urine) are also collected to determine biomarker levels. The visits will take place at the regionally competent center, at the pre-arranged place and time.
