He is the Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Semmelweis University and is the supervisor of more than ten Ph.D. students at CTM. Many of them have achieved great success, publishing in the world's most prestigious scientific journals. In May, Prof. Dr. Nándor Ács was named Supervisor of the Month (Year 2-3) at the Centre for Translational Medicine.
Professor Ács joined the CTM as supervisor and group leader when the Centre moved to Semmelweis University from Pécs, and now he has more than ten Ph.D. students. He consults with them not only in group meetings but also in weekly meetings at the clinic, and they can also reach him if they have any specific question. The students' research topics are varied. For example, one investigates the impact of anemia during pregnancy, while another investigates the role of physiotherapy in women's pain syndromes. Professor Ács also has a Ph.D. student who is studying the impact of vaginal infections during pregnancy on the risk of preterm birth. Another student is investigating the effectiveness of different techniques in preventing preterm birth. Also of interest is a Ph.D. student who is investigating the impact of fathers' age on pregnancy outcomes and the risk of congenital anomalies.
One of Professor Ács' students recently achieved an outstanding scientific achievement. She is Dr. Boglárka Pethő, a third-year Ph.D. student. “She's a specialist doctor in obstetrics and gynecology at our clinic, who is currently at home with her baby, but she didn't stop her scientific work during pregnancy. She is a very precise and focused colleague, so it was easy to work with her. We were also very flexible with her, adapting to her availability as a pregnant mother. Her topic is the effect of maternal age on the development of congenital anomalies. I suggested this topic to her because we have a huge register on it, which had never been systematically processed. She analyzed this in her Ph.D. research and also conducted a large meta-analysis on congenital anomalies. We are very pleased that this research has been published in two of the world's most important journals of our field. The first was published a year ago in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and the second was recently published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, the second most important journal out of 150 obstetrics and gynecology journals worldwide. This is a huge success.
Professor Ács has another Ph.D. student who, like Dr. Pethő, has completed his Ph.D. research, and just needs to defend it. He has been studying the effects of influenza during pregnancy on congenital disabilities. “I think the Centre for Translational Medicine's system is a great support for our scientific work. The cooperation is great because we have lot of interesting topics in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and we have excellent young colleagues and outstanding supervisors. In addition, CTM provides methodological support that makes our scientific work very effective. My Ph.D. students and I also feel this, we have excellent cooperation with the Centre's methodological experts and statisticians, which has contributed greatly to our success.”
