We are delighted to congratulate Dr Péter Jenő Hegyi and Dr Alexandra Mikó, supervisors of the Translational Medicine Programme, on receiving the 2026 János Bolyai Research Scholarship of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), both in the field of Medical Sciences.

Established in 1997, the János Bolyai Research Scholarship is one of Hungary’s most prestigious national research fellowships. The programme aims to recognise and support outstanding research performance among young scientists, promote the development of independent research careers, and support researchers in their preparation for obtaining the Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (DSc) title. Applications are evaluated through a competitive process involving expert reviews and recommendations from the relevant scientific panels.

The highly competitive nature of the scholarship is reflected in this year’s results: 157 researchers were selected from 766 valid applications in 2026. This year’s scholarship recipients were celebrated at the annual Bolyai Day held at the headquarters of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest on 16 September.

We are particularly proud that two supervisors of the Translational Medicine Programme are among this year’s recipients. Dr Péter Jenő Hegyi is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Pancreatic Diseases, Semmelweis University, while Dr Alexandra Mikó is a clinician at the Institute for Translational Medicine, University of Pécs. Alongside their research activities, both contribute to the education and scientific mentoring of the next generation of researchers within the Translational Medicine Programme.
